Service Description

Learn the history of Dia De Los Muertos and use the national visual art standards of “connecting” to expand our knowledge of the societal and cultural value of art of the holiday. Students will learn the cultural significance of “papel picado” and sugar skulls to the artists. I will provide the materials and show my example of “papel picado.” We will assist the students in planning their banners and choosing colors. Students use their fine motor skills to make small cuts in the paper. When the banner pieces are complete, the artists will glue their paper around the string to create a banner. Explore the cultural significance of “sugar skulls” and give them an opportunity to paint or decorate a sugar skull with paint, rhinestones, piping icing and more. We will talk about commonly used colors and items seen in the Dia de Los Muertos celebrations and how we can incorporate them into our pieces of art. Artists will bring home their pieces and be encouraged to display them in their home.
